In this talk, Dr. Sehrish Kanwal will share her experience as a participant in the international rOpenSci Champions Program for 2024. This yearlong program, renowned for its cohort-based training, project development, and personalised mentorship, provides a platform for researchers to champion open science principles and practices.

Through the program's support, Dr. Kanwal made significant advancements in developing RNAsum, an R package that combines genomic and transcriptomic data from individual cancer patient samples. This cutting-edge tool empowers researchers to investigate genetic alterations and personalized genome changes, ultimately enhancing prognosis, patient management, and health outcomes in precision oncology settings.

Dr. Kanwal will further delve into the intricacies of RNAsum's implementation and usability, highlighting its potential to revolutionize cancer research. Additionally, she will share insights into the transformative power of open science practices, fostered through the rOpenSci Champions Program, and their impact on advancing scientific transparency, collaboration, and reproducibility.

Dr. Sehrish Kanwal is a senior bioinformatician at the University of Melbourne Centre for Cancer Research, specializing in cancer genomics and clinical data analysis. Beyond her scientific work, she is a passionate advocate for gender equity and empowering women in STEM fields. Dr. Kanwal has been a driving force behind R-Ladies Melbourne, promoting inclusivity, support, and mentorship within the R community. She is a dedicated mentor and a teacher, who believes in empowering and supporting students and junior researchers. Her commitment to open science, reproducibility, and advancing bioinformatics research led to her innovative project proposal being selected for the prestigious rOpenSci Champions Program.
